Scourge Reviews M13 Spoilers

by TheScourgeXV88

Hey, it’s Scourge again, this time bringing you the cards spoiled for M13 thus far (as of June 20th). If you haven’t looked at the list so far, go here!

Alright, now, down to the nitty gritty. Let’s start top down!

WHITE:

Yup. He’s here folks. He’s rad, he’s bad, and he’s ready to get down to business. This guy’s gonna be a staple in standard for a long time. First of all, the three converted mana cost is insane. Only the third walker with a three converted mana cost or less (because Tibalt doesn’t count…ever). Shenanigans are to be pulled, for sure. ‘Specially with that three months that 2012 will be legal, heh. But, the shenanigans aren’t what I’m getting at here. Let’s think about the deck he’ll be at most home in: an aggro deck. Soo, let’s just say…ohh, how about a Naya ramp deck? Mana dork turn one, Ajani turn two? Sounds pretty damn good to me. Now, let’s go on with that scenario. See that +1 ability? Not only is it giving him FIVE loyalty (yup, five) on turn two/three, but he’s buffing that blocker. Or not, your choice. Because IT SAYS UP TO ONE. Yup, he can use it on a clean board. Soo, ideal conditions, five loyalty on turn two? Beat through that, Delver.

Now, let’s move on. His minus-three? Broken. Hey, let’s give him Elspeth’s ability, except on crack. Sure, that’s a great idea, too. Evasion and huge damage. If I get my hands on him, I know what deck I’m making (it’s hexblade, btw).

For his last ability, to be completely honest, I’m not impressed. Yeah, that’s most likely gonna be a lot of kitties, but that just seems like you’re overextending, and the game SHOULD be over by that point. I mean, specially with those first two abilities. Oh, another thing to add before I forget. That first ability? You can put counters on your opponents creatures, too. Think that’s a bad idea? Geralf’s Messenger would like a word with you. Or Strangleroot Geist. Just sayin’, that’s a possibility, too.

Alright, let’s move on to the next noteworthy white card:

Talk about a powerhouse…holy shit. So, let’s just, you know, get Ajani onto the field, put out a beastie, and then drop this biotch. Minus-three, swing for massive amounts. Or any other creature with evasion. I just can’t stop thinking about good cards with her. Invisible Stalker. Geist of Saint Traft. Strangleroot Geist. Anything that puts in tokens. Anything that already has exalted…the list goes on. This card….dis card. I can’t really express my love/hate for this card enough. I’d stock up on her if I could, too. Plus, she’s got flying herself, so the next turn you play her, worst comes to worst, you can swing with her instead of anyone else. She’ll be pretty damn big at that point. I don’t think much in the air will quite beat that.

Honorable Mentions:

Yay! Serra Avatar was reprinted! To what end? I dunno. Seems like a decent sideboard target for reanimator, I guess. I dunno, nostalgia’s getting the best of me, I suppose. She’s big, and she doesn’t permanently die (unless removed, of course), but she’s still…big.

Anywho, to the other card. Anyone else thinks he looks a stunning amount like Christopher Waltz (Inglourious Basterds… Green Hornet…come on, people)? I really think he does. Also, he has the Avacyn Restored symbol plastered ALL over him. Thinking he was something that was left out of the last set….hmmm…something to PONDER. (Get it? It’s a Magic pun…oh, shut up.) Not sure how he’ll stand out in constructed, if at all; considering his ability only works if you mass swing, and they’ve brought back exalted…

Next up, Daba De, Daba Di! I’m BLUE:

Well, this guy’s got a bit going for himself.  A 1/1 flyer for one is always acceptable in my book.  Oh, look, he even has another ability, let’s see what it OH MY GOD.  Soo, he’s good early game, and he’s phenomenal mid/late game as well?  Oh, Wizards…isn’t blue good enough as it is?

Thought Scour…just playing cards…your opponent’s yard will be full to the brim by mid game, giving you a four turn clock for one mana.  Seems legit.

Honorable Mentions:

Soo, I just had to mention this card. Reminiscent of anyone in particular? LOL

And now, to BLACKen your eye…no, nothing? Well, anyways…

Yes, this is the card you want me to review:

Well, what do you want me to say? She won’t see play in standard unless something drastic comes out in the spoilers/m13. She has one less loyalty for the one more the cost (as Ajani), and doesn’t even protect herself. Granted, grabbing a swamp and thinning your deck out is decent, it’s just sooooo…’mleehhh’. He second ability isn’t bad, though. Serves as a great pump or a great kill spell in mono black…provided you want to kill her the moment she sees play. And her ultimate is…just…meeeehh. There’s nothing in standard right now you want to pump soooooo much into the ‘X’ cost of, and even the ones that you might? Need another color. And don’t even tell me Diabolic Revelation, I’ll hurt you. All in all…I actually like her. Yes, you heard me. I LIKE HER. But, that’s because a friend of mine got me addicted to EDH. And that’s where she’ll see play. Oh, and casual. I very seriously doubt she’ll see tournament play unless a lot more support for her is printed.

Next…you know what? I’m not even going to link a picture…anyone who’s reading this probably knows what/who I’m talking about from Zendikar. Yup, NOCTURNUS and NIGHTHAWK are back. God damn vampires…why can’t they ever stay dead? Granted, they don’t have nearly the support they had from Zendikar, it’s still enough to be a viable threat. I mean, they’re still amazing cards. Nocturnus may not see constructed play, but I’ll bet my left nut Nighthawk will. And you all can quote me on that.

Oh, I guess there is another guy I should show…he’s pretty good…

Sooo, he seems pretty good, now that exalted is in the format pretty heavily. I’m really liking the idea of a W/B exalted deck…

Next up, to make you blush RED…what? It’s late, I’m getting tired, and these puns are just running me ragged…I do this for YOU, people!

Well, here’s the legend for Red. Not terrible, I suppose. For the time that Goblin Chieftain and Goblin Wardriver are in together with him, I can see fringe mono red lists with him in them. I mean, he’s not terrible. As long as you’ve got a way to give those puppies haste, he’s great. And he IS rather big, for a goblin at least. I think he has potential, but only for the time before Ravnica. Not quite sure after that. And as for the other formats…I really don’t know. Goblin Warchief makes him better, for sure. And those tokens really help a Piledriver hit home, but will he merit a spot in legacy goblins? Maybe as a one of, I guess. Only time will tell. All in all, he’s not bad.

Now that’s a pretty picture. Much better than the old Earthquake’s picture. Oh, yeah, that’s all I think this is, is an upgraded Earthquake. But will it be an Earthquake replacement? It DOES cost that extra red…and that does matter in a lot of decks. But, to make up for that, it is instant, which is pretty awesome. I like it, I really do. It’s our other board wiper that we were looking for.

Honorable Mention:

Yay EDH! Oh wait, it might get banned. Heh, it’s on the lookout for EDH players, but we’ll have to see how it fares. And yes, we all know suspend Rift Bolt, somehow cast, gg. But what about the fun ways of doing it? Best way I’ve been told as of yet? Oblivion Ring in play with a Kessig Malcontents under it. Cast. Win. YOU HEARD ME. Tell me something different and win 10 internetz.

And now, to make you GREEN WITH ENVY. Yup. I just went there. Deal with it, I’m crazy. I mean…yes.

First up, Mr. Lucky Seven!

Look at the printed number of sevens on the card. Yup, there’s seven…actually, there’s ten, but where it matters (and you discount mana cost), there’s seven. Don’t judge. Soo, this guy. Pretty beast pull in limited, just sayin’. A better Worship on a creature, I’ll take it. He’s also pretty funny if you think about it. But I’ll get to that in a bit.

Let’s look at green’s legend!

Let’s talk about this for a second. Green has a Worship, and now it can give your good stuff flash? Seems legit. And she’s got a great body. I WAS TALKING ABOUT THE BEAR. I mean…oh dear. But seriously, a 4/4 for four I’ve never complained about…though I wouldn’t with that bear sitting right there…

Next up, a reprint that everyone’s bound to love! Probably a little too much, too…

Who didn’t like this card? Oh, right, the people on the receiving end. >:D I know I loved it. And I’m positive it will see play.

And now, for the card you’ve probably been waiting to see in this review, because he’s fucking broken.

You all remember Obstinate Baloth, right? Or even Great Sable Stag? Yeah, here’s another one. And he’s even worse, as far as I’m concerned. First off, let’s just look at the raw stats. Five for a 5/3, pretty typical for a green beat stick, but I’ll take it. When he enters play, gain five life. Alright, it offsets his toughness, he’s worth it. Oh, when he leaves play, get a 3/3 beast token. That’s…quite good. Overall, he’s a really efficient and great green beater. But, that’s NOT why he’s retarded. Let’s think about all that’s in standard right now…even when 2012 and all that rotates out, let’s take a look. Resoration Angel, Cloudshift, and more. You get my drift. He’ll be blinked in any possible deck that he can. Gain loads of life, and get loads of dudes. Why not? Oh, let’s throw Sublime Archangel in the mix, too. Get your dudes huge when they swing. As much as I thought it was going to be a black summer, I’m really leaning towards G/W now. It seems to be…rather good.

And now, I’ll multi your….color. I don’t know, there’s only one card, and we all know him. But I’ll link him ’cause he’s pretty.

You know him, you love him, and he’s terrible. Yup. Eight cost is just a bit much. Don’t get me wrong, his abilities are fine. His ultimate truly ends games, and destroying other walkers is great. And his -2 is fantastic. But that eight cost…ugh. Too much, man, too much. I wish I could say I would use him. Well, that’s not true, I would. But I just can’t see him being competitive in standard. But please, feel free to prove me wrong.

You belong in a museum with all those ARTIFACTS! Heh, League of Legends reference, anyone? Ugh. I don’t know what I try so hard…

And, to LAND the big one, the one and only land spoiler that matters:

Talk about Exalted back in force…this is just ridiculous. Oh no, it sets me behind a turn. OH NO IT MAKES ANYTHING I SWING WITH BIGGER BY JUST SITTING THERE. Primeval Titan’s still standard for three months, you know. Just sayin’.

And with that, you see my opinions on what’s been spoiled thus far in M13. I will put out another article if they put out a big bomb in the upcoming weeks, but I really don’t think that will happen. To compare, 2012 had 13 mythics in the set, and they’ve already spoiled 12 in 2013, so I don’t think we’ll see anymore of that, and that leaves rares. Not that rares won’t be good, mind you, but I doubt they’re on the same level as Thragtusk or Cathedral. Who knows, maybe they will be., and I’ll just have to write another article. Oh, and the rumor about them reprinting the shock lands in M13? I’m gonna say that’s NOT gonna happen, but I’m going to cross my fingers anyways. =P

This is TheScourge, wishing you a…magical day? Oy. I’m not a slogan kind of guy, if ya’ know what I mean? Heh? Heh? You people are no fun…
