BBL: I Gotta Go Take an App

by steampunkphreak

College is a wonderful time, where I discover I have almost no time to write something not due for class. But since I’m finally on break, I have a chance to crank out a few articles before being dragged back! So, for my return article back, I’ll be looking at…apps! With more smartphones being bought now, it seems more and more useful to take a look at some apps, both free and purchased, and many unknown on a large scale. Now I’ll be doing some brief looks at a few apps, what they feature, cost, and whether you should buy them.

And before you start wondering, no, I won’t be doing Angry Birds, since I have a plan for it later. The same goes for Doodlejump and Plants vs. Zombies. The simple answer, they’re fun, they cost [no?] money. So yea, let’s start with some apps in no particular order.

Nintendo 3DS Ambassador: NES Games, Worth it?

by Thief92

Ambitious? Yes. Costly? Very...

The Nintendo 3DS  has gotten a lot of flack and praise this year. Nintendo’s newest and most ambitious handheld to date has been the butt of many a joke as well as the star of many a nerd’s wet dreams. There was plenty to talk about this year with the major complaint I heard about the device being the lack of worthwhile titles for its $250 price tag. The August price drop was little consolation for those who bought the system at the midnight release like I did, but I was able to calm myself when I found out I would be getting 20 free games and be titled a “3DS Ambassador”. Well isn’t that just crazy?

But did the Ambassador games live up to the hype? Were they worth the $40 that would have been deducted from the price of the device? The 10 games in question are: Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Jr., Balloon Fight, Ice Climber, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, NES Open Tournament Golf, Yoshi, and Wrecking Crew.

The VGAs — Rant Follow-Up

by Incontrol88

If you listened to my rant HERE on the Paranerds Podcast, you know I think the VGAs didn’t really get a fair shake. Its important to note that this is only the 9th annual event, meaning a decade ago we didn’t even have a mainstream award show for games. That being said, I think we could all stand to be a little more appreciative of the attention our medium is getting, even if every pretentious ass with a Twitter account thinks they could have run it better.

I'ma let you finish

League of Legends Champion Review: Volibear, The Thunder’s Roar

by Thief92

Warning: Never get Volibear wet.

Thing’s certainly aren’t what they seem, are they? When I started playing Riot Games’ League of Legends, I thought to myself, “Wow, there aren’t very many champs to choose from.” Now it seems they’re just pumping them out every single week. I’ve played through the most recent ones but none of them have intrigued me quite like Volibear, The Thunder’s Roar. First of all, he’s an armored bear. Not only an armored bear, a lightningarmored bear. What’s that sound? Oh. It’s the draining of my Influence Points for this bad boy — er, bear. But as soon as I clicked Buy I got what I like to call IP Anxiety. Thoughts like “What if I just wasted all of my IP on this champ for nothing?” or “Why didn’t I just buy runes instead?” Riot never really reviews their champions and no one really gives you a clear, concise, point for point review of whether or not you should buy this champion. Well that, my friends, is going to change. This is our League of Legends Champion Review.Volibear, just like every champion in the League, has three standard moves, an ultimate and a Passive. They are Chosen of the Storm (Passive), Rolling Thunder, Frenzy, Majestic Roar, and, his ultimate, Thunder Claws.Chosen of the Storm heals Volibear rapidly when his health reaches a critical low. I personally have had this save my life multiple times. It’s a great passive, and it goes great with Heal. Once my passive is triggered I will pop a heal and boom, I’m back up to half health and destroying “those that follow in my wake.”

The King of RPGs

by Incontrol88

Sometimes you see something on the Internet you just can’t let go. Some troll or noob will say something so flagrantly wrong that you can’t just dismiss it as webjunk and move on. Something inside you just calls for justice.

That’s how I felt when I saw this IGN article touting the Super Nintendo as the King of RPGs. This isn’t a matter of opinion. The article is just wrong. But I’d have been willing to let that pass as a nostalgic statement or an expression of bias based on a penchant for Nintendo products. The thing that got me was how the writer justified her choice by saying the key element to RPGs is the gameplay, which is just patently false with no room whatsoever for interpretation. In fact, I’d put gameplay at the bottom of a list of factors contributing to a successful RPG.

^^Not the king.
